Marta Górnicka – director, singer, graduate of the Faculty of Drama Directing at the Warsaw Theatre Academy. She also studied at the Frederic Chopin School of Music in Warsaw, at the Warsaw University and the State Drama School in Krakow. Among others she collaborated with Robert Wilson on the Warsaw production of Symptoms/Akropolis by Gabriella Maione and Stanisław Wyspiański. She has staged a number of solo performances as well as recorded a CD for the Polish Public Radio with songs by Astor Piazzola. She is an author of a special vocal-acting training for voice/body, aimed at finding an organic female voice. According to this method she has led drama workshops in Dresden, Tokyo, Berlin, Tel Aviv, Nottingham, London, Utrecht, Kiev, Marseille, Paris and Havre.
From 2009 to 2014 she cooperated with the Zbigniew Raszewski Theater Institute in Warsaw, creating her own concept of the chorus theater, the CHORUS OF WOMEN - modern tragic chorus, writing librettos and directing performances. The birth of the group was accompanied by an idea to “regain female voice” and create post-modern chorus theater – an esthetic, formal and ideological concept of theater, which merges western scene’s original power of collective voice/body with contemporary critic of language as a tool of power. A premiere of the first project THIS IS THE CHORUS SPEAKING: only 6 to 8 hours… took place on June 13, 2010. A year later there was a premiere of the CHORUS OF WOMEN’s second project, MAGNIFICAT.
In 2012, MAGNIFICAT won the Jury Prize at the Kontrapunkt Review of Small Theatre Forms, the Main Jury Prize for Direction for Marta and Popular Choice Prize for the best performance at the M-Theatre Festival in Koszalin. MAGNIFICAT also won prestigious award for the best performance at the Mess Festival in Sarajevo in Future MESS category as well as two special awards by journalists of Radio Sarajevo and Hrabri Novi Svijet magazine. Marta Gornicka was also awarded the First Prize for Directing of MAGNIFICAT at the FastForward European Festival of Young Directors in Braunschweig.
On March 24, 2013 an opening night of REQUIEMACHINE took place at the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute in Warsaw. The libretto was based on poetic texts of Wladyslaw Broniewski. The performance was co-produced by La Filature - Scene Nationale, Mulhouse, Theatre National de Strasbourg, Le Maillon - Theatre de Strasbourg and Ringlokschuppen, Mulheim an der Ruhr. The French premiere took place in May 2013 in La Filature - Scene Nationale and the German premiere was in June 2013 in Ringlokschuppen, Mülheim an der Ruhr. Marta’s third production is a continuation of her project for a modern tragic CHORUS that serves as means of critical reflection upon man as shaped by the norms of culture, society, the economy and religion.
Marta Gornicka successfully presented her performances during more than 36 theater and directing festivals worldwide, among other in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan, Ukraine, India, Belgium, Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Holland, Switzerland and England. Two performances, MAGNIFICAT and REQUIEMACHINE were presented during one of the most prestigious European festivals - BERLINER FESTSPIELE - FOREIGN AFFAIRS in Berlin in 2014, as well as in the Netherlands during the International SPRING Performing Arts Festival and the MESS FESTIVAL in Sarajevo. In 2013, there was an overview of the entire work of Marta Gornicka at the Festival International de Theatre SENS INTERDITS in Lyon and Malta Festival in Poznan in 2013.
THE CHORUS OF WOMEN team currently consists of more than 50 people, women and men, and from 2014 it has been cooperating with TR Warszawa.
Marta has been expanding her concept of a new chorus theater. In September 2013 in Košice, Slovakia she made a performance THE CHORUS OF ROMA PEOPLE with participation of the Roma people community. Kosice is where Europe's largest Roma people ghetto is located. The premiere and following performances took place in the framework of the project X-Apartment as part of the European Capital of Culture in 2013.
In December 2014 in the Museum of Modern Art in Tel Aviv there was a premiere of MOTHER COURAGE WON”T REMAIN SILENT. A CHORUS FOR WAR TIME. Marta Gornicka invited 60-member chorus of Arab and Jewish mothers, Israeli soldiers-dancers, and Arab children. Marta moves her research to the space of particularly understood social groups direction. To her project she invites groups functioning in radically conflicting communities, she works with them to create a possibility to express extreme emotions and initiate direct interaction between those who are separated by an invisible barrier. It is no longer about reproduction of conflict and mechanisms of its rise on a stage, but about revealing it in its whole intensity and deadly collisions. And despite it, still to find opportunity to create a joint work that will speak in many languages and at the same time in one human voice.
The Israeli performance starts a triptych around a theme of Mother Courage, whose next realizations will take place in Poland, France and Germany, german premiere took place in September 2015 at the Staatstheater in Braunschweig.
